PLAY PAR GOLF

PLAY PAR GOLF

A quantity surveyor who had in the past played golf and thought he still knew a lot about the game once told me how to play par golf and this is how.

First we need to make some assumptions

  • Taking an average golf course that has 4 par 3’s averaging 150 yards, 3 par 5’s averaging 500 yards and the remaining 11 holes par 4’s averaging 400 yards.
  • To make it easier we will assume you play with a handicap of 18 ie 1 shot per hole.
  • The course we are going to play has a standard scratch of 72, which means with your 18 shots you need to shoot 90 to make par.

Taking the par 3 holes first you should be able to get onto the green in 2 and get down in 2, therefore on all of the 4 par 3’s you will take in total 12 shots leaving you 90-12= 78 shots for the remaining holes.

On the 11 par 4 holes you should be able to reach the green in 3 shots and get down in 2 totalling 55 shots now leaving you (78-55=23) 23 shots for the 3 par 5 holes.

That means you can take 8 on two holes and 7 on one.(8+8+7=23) On these 3 holes you should be able get to the green in 4 and on 2 have 4 puts and on the other 3.

If you take a par 3 o average about 150 yards in length and you have allowed 2 shots into the green you will only need a wedge or 9 iron to get there.

On the par 4 holes assuming they average about 400 yards you could hit three 8 irons to reach the green.

A par 5 will average about 500 yards and with your 4 shots you can take each only needs to be an 8 iron.

The conclusion.

Take your clubs from the driver right down to the 7 iron and throw them in the bin – you don’t need them, or is my maths wrong?
