Redpost Golf- Competition Scandal

BREAKING NEWS

Lord Bree demands recount

Following the announcement of the competition winner of our Paula v Paul page, Lord Dexter Bree has today demanded a recount.

Speaking to the Redpost Golf Blog editor Lord Bree said

"This is absolutely outrageeous that someone else has dared to enter. I was only told the answers 4 times and then because I am extremely busy Russel Davis got his answers in before me. I am appalled by this turn of events and I have written to the Redpost Golf Society committee demanding a public enquiry and a recount. We live in a democracy and vote rigging should not be tolerated."

In reply Mr "Pinkie" Davis replied

"I only went in the compo as a laff and I didn't fink I wood win."

The organising committe of the Redpost Golf Society has so far declined to cooment but has made the following statistics available
  • No of competion entrants 2
  • First respondent Russel "Pinkie" Davis
  • First correct answer received from
  • Russel "Pinkie" Davis
Just to recap so that you can make up your own mind what the competion was about and what the winning answers were the following are the questions and the couple in question.

Is Paula Trickey better looking than Paul Trickey?

Answer YES

Does Paula have a better swing than Paul?

Answer YES

Our version
Please note he doesn't have much of a
drink problem
The lovely Paula

If anybody who is not a member of The Redpost Golf Society wishes to give their opinion please do so in the comments box below and we will send the first to reply a sleeve of 3 Wilson Golf Balls just to upset Lord Bree even more!

Redpost Golf - Bridport Event report

BRIDPORT EVENT

29th June 2012

Our June event took place at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club, funnily enough located in West Dorset. For our international readers West Dorset lies in the west of the county of Dorset  in the UK. Paula I hope you are reading this.
Jeff and i left home with the weather looking decidedly wet, something we have got used to over the last few weeks or even months. After visiting Tesco in Dorchester to top up the drinking voucher funds the weather brightened up considerably. On arrival we had our normal Coffee and Bacon Roll before setting off in a Force 6 blowing in off the sea.
The first hole is relatively sheltered but the full force of the wind hits you on the second when you are playing into the prevailing winds. Our group Jeff, Brian Dave and me battled on not scoring very highly but enjoying our golf. Reaching the 6th signature hole which is about a 130 yard par 3 with the tee about 30 metres above the green we all had to make a decision as to which club we should take and we all ended up with varying degrees of failure.
Just to digress for a minute, while collecting dog food from a local dog food supplier somebody thought my iphone might be better in their possession than mine so I was left without my normal means of taking pictures. I had brought another phone with me but could not really remember how to take pictures with it and not having my reading glasses with me and being half blind I could not see where I was supposed to save them. Result no pictures.

A Superb Escape
Back to the 6th hole. My ball embedded itself so deeply into the sand about 2 inches from the lip in one of the back bumpers that all you could see of the ball was a circle about 1/2" in diameter. I attempted to take a picture of this but as I was unable to take any  I have done a little drawing to demonstrate the position and think that you would be amazed that I got out of this position in only 2 shotsThe other highlights of our game was Brian's bouncing bomb shot across the lake on the 10th which left him with a chance of a birdie and Jeff's disgust at not winning Nearest the pin on the 18th because a person unknown ( Trick?) had placed the marker board for nearest the Pin right  on his line to the green and his ball richocheted off this and ended up in the greenside bunker. Tough luck but as you eventually finished  2nd in the competion  anyway and won a botlle of Maces £3 vintage wine you can't be greedy.
The competition was won by "Pinkie" Davis with 28 points, second was Jeff Miller with if I remember 26 points and thirdly was yours truly with a magnificent 24 points. The low scoring obviously reflects the difficulty of the conditions we played in ( our excuses). Full results to be posted shortly. The Bridport trophy would have been presented if "bob the Builder" had remembered to bring it along with the 2's list etc.
At the after golf meal it was unanimously agreed that when Paula Trickey replies to our email asking her to become our first Honourary International member we might have to throw out Paul " Bob the builder" Trickey. For the second month in succession we were treated to sausages on Bubble and squeak and we wondered if this is to be the next fad happening in golf.
The competition on the blog as to whether Paula was better looking and had a better golf swing than " Bob tne Builder" was eventually won by Pinkie who was selected from the numerous entrants- 1. Dexter obviously couldn't get onto the site because of the overwhelming response.
Unfortunately "Shiner " couldn't make it and we were all looking forward to a repeat Barton on Sea performance where he lost 22 balls as his dear friends the adders have now taken up residence at Bridport.
Brian Davis
To finish on a sad note Brian has told us that this might be the last time he is able to play with us due to poor health. This will be a great loss to our society but we hope in the future he might feel well enough to play with us again. I know he will probably not want any recognition but Brian has been a stalwart of the society and i am sure that I speak for us all when I say that he will be missed if this was his last outing. He has always supported us in attending all events and has never been frightened of saying what he thought when he considered what we were doing was wrong.
Unfortunately that is 2 members we have lost this year through ill health the other being Bill Needs and I think it will be fitting that we try and replenish our trophy cabinet with a B and B trophy . What do others think.
Finally just a reminder that our next meet will be at Hamptworth on the last Friday of July.

Redpost Golf-Training Aids Help or hindrance?

Are golf training aids useful or are they just another way of conning people to pay more money for the sport they love?
The only training aids I have ever had were ones that were given to me one was  a gadget that you pushed into the grass and had a ball suspended on about 6 inches of string from an arm above. The other one was a Velcro driven thing whereby you had to fix a tee into the end of your club and if I remember rightly strap it onto your wrist and onto the tee in some way. The first one ended up with the ball becoming detached from the string and disappearing into the distance and as I was not inclined to drill another hole into another ball this aid was quickly despatched to the bin. The Velcro gadget was so time consuming to put on and did not seem to improve anything about my golf swing. So like the first item it was sent to the same place.
I have seen and I am sure you all must have seen the plethora of other training aids from hinging golf clubs with Henry Moore sculpted grips to two meter diameter plastic rings on a specially and scientifically calibrated stand. There are also aids which comprise bungee cords which can be attached to the nearest tree to make sure your rotation is correct, putting aids which anyone with a little bit of draughting and DIY skill could knock up from a piece of hardboard and a bathroom mirror.
I have found the best way to train for golf is to look at some professionals tips such as swinging a putter through a line of tee pegs or practicing the basic principles on a regular basis. When I was first introduced to golf having been given a course of lessons, the first lesson was just about grip and I was told to go away and practice this until the next lesson. The lessons taught me all about the acronym GASP-Grip, Alignment, Stance and Posture and when I find myself doing something wrong which as I get older happens more frequently I revert back to these basics and 9 times out of 10 they seem to work. I don’t believe being anchored to the ground or using any other mechanical device is going to help me.
I will happily concede there is one mechanical item that has helped my golf, but it is not to improve my ball hitting , it is an electric trolley to preserve my back so I can go on playing into old age
As you can gather I am a Golf Training Aid Sceptic so I would be interested to hear your comments on whether you think that they might be useful.
Please try and convince me.

Redpost Golf - Basic Golf Rules

I have to admit that I found these on another site and they are in a series of 1 minute golf tips from the Pachesham Golf Academy.

Hopefully they will be a good guide for all of our members when confronted with a situation they are not entirely au faix with.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR ROUND
- Read the Local Rules on the score card.
- Put an identification mark on your ball. If you can't identify your ball, it's lost.
- You are allowed a maximum of 14 clubs.
- During the round, don't ask for ‘advice’ from anyone except your partner or caddie. Don't give advice to anyone except your partner.PLAYING THE BALL
- Play the ball as it lies, don't improve your lie, the area of your intended swing or your line of play by moving, bending or breaking anything fixed or growing except in fairly taking your stance or making your swing. If your ball lies in a bunker or a water hazard don't touch the ground in the bunker, or the
ground, or water in the water hazard, before your downswing.
- Playing a wrong ball (except in a hazard) - in match play you lose the hole. In stroke play you incur a two-stroke penalty and you must then play the correct ball.
ON THE PUTTING GREEN
- You may repair ball marks and old hole plugs on the line of your putt but not any other damage, including spike marks.
- You may mark, lift and clean your ball on the putting green but always replace it on the exact spot.
Ball played from putting green strikes flagstick - in match play you lose the hole; in stroke play you incur a two-stroke penalty.
LIFTING, DROPPING AND PLACING THE BALL
- If a lifted ball is to be replaced its position must be marked. If a ball is to be dropped or placed in any other position (e.g. taking relief from GUR, etc.) it is recommended that the ball’s original position be marked.
- When dropping, stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm's length and drop it within two club-lengths of where the ball lies, not nearer the hole.
LOST BALL OR OUT OF BOUNDS
- Check the Local Rules on the score card to identify the boundaries of the course. If your ball is lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds you must play another ball from the spot where the last shot was played under penalty of one stroke i.e. stroke and distance. You are allowed 5 minutes to search for a ball, after which if it is not found or identified it is lost. If, after playing a shot, you think your ball may be lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds you may play a ‘provisional ball’. You must state that it is a provisional ball and play it before you go forward to search for the original ball. If the original ball is lost or out of bounds you must continue with the provisional ball under penalty of one stroke. If the original ball is not lost or out of bounds, you must continue play of the hole with it and the provisional ball must be abandoned.
- Under a penalty of one stroke, you may drop a ball behind the hazard as far back as you wish keeping the point of entry in line with the flag or you may play from where you played the original shot.
WATER HAZARDS (yellow stakes)
- Ball in water hazard (yellow stakes and/or lines) - play the ball as it lies or, under penalty of one stroke,
a) play again from where you hit the ball into the hazard, or
b) drop any distance behind the water hazard keeping a straight line between the hole, the point where the ball last crossed the margin on the water hazard and the spot on which the ball is dropped.
LATERAL WATER HAZARDS (red stakes)
- Under a penalty of 1 stroke you have 4 options.
a) drop the ball within 2 club lengths to the side where the ball entered the hazard, not nearer the hole.
b) drop the ball behind the hazard as far as you wish keeping the point of entry in line with the flag.
c) play another ball from your original position.
d) drop a ball on the other side of the hazard, within 2 club lengths but not nearer the hole.
IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS
- Check the Local Rules on the score card for guidance on immovable obstructions (e.g. surfaced roads and paths etc.).
- Movable obstructions (e.g. rakes, tin cans etc.) anywhere on the course may be moved. If the ball moves it must be replaced without penalty.
UNPLAYABLE LIE
- It is your privilege (and you are the sole judge) to declare the ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball lies in or touches a water hazard, you may under penalty of one stroke,
(a) drop within two club-lengths of where the ball lies not nearer the hole,
(b) drop any distance behind the point where the ball lay keeping a straight line between the hole, the point where the ball lay and the spot on which the ball is dropped, or
(c) replay the shot.

Redpost-Golf- Other Golf Betting

Just to amuse Trick with his snakes, here are a few other different ways of golf betting

1. Nassau

The Nassau is three bets in one: low score on the front nine, low score on the back nine and low score over the full 18. The $2 Nassau is perhaps the most common bet among golf buddies.

2. Round Robin

Round Robin, also known as Hollywood or Sixes, is a betting game for groups of four that involves two members of the foursome teaming up against the other two. The catch is that partners rotate every six holes.

3. Sandies

Sandies have a set value throughout the round. A golfer automatically wins the bet (depending on the rules being played) either by making par on a hole in which he was in a sand trap; or by getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker.

4. Bingo Bango Bongo

Bingo Bango Bongo awards points throughout the round for three different accomplishments. At the end of the round, points are totaled and the differences are paid out.

5. Barkies

Barkies, sometimes called Woodies or Seves (as in Seve Ballesteros), are paid automatically to any player who makes par on a hole on which he hit a tree. The value of a Barkie is determined before the round.

6. Wolf

Wolf is one of the classic golf betting games for groups of four, but it gets a little complicated. Players rotate as the "Wolf." On each hole, the player designated as the Wolf has to choose whether to play 1 against 3, or 2 on 2; and if 2 on 2, then the Wolf has to choose a partner. The Wolf can win or lose more money by going it alone.

7. Arnies

Arnies are side bets whose value should be determined prior to the round. They are won automatically by any golfer who makes a par without having managed to get his ball into the fairway. Named in honor of Arnold Palmer, who made quite a few "Arnies" in his time.

8. Aces and Dueces

Aces and Dueces, or Acey Ducey, is a bet in which there is a winner, two modest losers, and one big loser on each hole. It's a game for groups of four, obviously. The low scorer on each hole wins a certain amount from each of the other three players; while the high scorer on each holes owes each of the other three.

9. Gruesomes

Gruesomes is betting game that pits 2-person teams against each other. Both team members tee off, then the other teams gets to choose which of the drives your side has to play. Obviously, they'll choose the worst - or most gruesome - of the two drives.

10. Criers and Whiners

Criers and Whiners is known by many different names, but the gist is the same: it's a game of mulligans for those players who are always crying and whining about that handful of shots they screwed up. "If only I could have hit that one again ..." The number of do-overs golfers get in Criers and Whiners is based on their handicap index.
